Lenticular clouds: 20 beautiful photos

Lenticular (lenticular) clouds — one of the most beautiful and rather rare phenomena. The main feature of these clouds is that they remain motionless even in strong wind. Typically, these clouds appear on the leeward sides of mountain ranges, ridges and individual peaks to a height of from 2 to 15 kilometers.

These unusual clouds are formed on the crests of air waves or between two layers of air. The flow of air, whizzing above the earth’s surface, flows around obstacles, and creates air waves.

In the wave flow is a continuous process of condensation of water vapor when it reaches the height of the dew point and evaporation during the descending movement of the air. Because of this, these clouds do not change their position in space.

The appearance of lenticular clouds indicate strong horizontal air currents in the atmosphere and the high moisture content. In turn, this is connected with the approaching atmospheric front.
